Rare photograph of jazz vocalist June Hutton performing with The Stardusters. Though formed in 1930 as a singing trio, the Stardusters did not gain prominence until 1941 when they became the backing group to jazz vocalist June Hutton. Hutton was a light skin African American performer who sometimes attempted to pass as a darker skinned white musician. She was the sister of Ina Ray Hutton. Many have speculated that because her skin features were slightly darker than her sisters, June Hutton preferred to perform as part of a white group, rather than a soloist like her sister. B
ecause of the discrimination prevalent in the segregation era, black musicians who had prominent roles w
ere heavily ostracized. Most club owners, band leaders and fellow musicians only wished to work with black musicians who were willing to perform as backups and not leads. Only a few exceptional
black artists were ever given the opportunity to headline and even then they faced the wrath of racist patrons. Finally it should be noted that as a woman of color June Hutton would have also faced barriers to obtaining the coveted cabaret card issued by New York City to all musicians. For all these reasons it's long been speculated that Hutton preferred to appear as part of a white quartet rather than a featured black soloist. Too bad as she possessed one of the finest smooth jazz voices throughout the entire bebop era. Had she not faced the hurdles of segregation she could have been as big as Billie Holiday or Nina Simone. She was that good! M
