Description

Three cents Nickel were minted from 1865 to 1889, but after 1876 only 1881 had circulation mintage quantities.
This was the first regular issue U. S. coin above one cent in value to be minted in copper-nickel alloy, and they were called "Nickels" in their early years. Silver three cent coins had been issued since 1851, and five cent coins minted in copper-nickel would not be issued until 1866.
Many of the three cents nickel were used to redeem the Fractional Currency (paper money of 3 cents to 75 cents in denomination) that was issued during the Civil War.
