In the early 1800s, the tradition of decorating gingerbread houses (Lebkuchenhäuser) was developed in Germany. According to theory, the houses were inspired by the house made of bread with sugar decorations from the story of Hansel and Gretel. With the help of Pennsylvania German immigrants, gingerbread houses made their way to America and are now a Christmas tradition for many families.
