    ECHO - I was launched on August 12th, 1960 and was the world's first communication satellite. ECHO consisted of a large plastic balloon (about 90 feet in diameter) that was coated with aluminum to reflect radio waves back to earth. For the eight years it orbited earth, this large "mirror" was an easy object to see in the night sky. These U.S. Postage stamps were issued on December 15th, 1960 to celebrate the successful launch of the satellite, and were the first U.S. postage stamps to depict the topic of Space.
