The pattern set in 1872 continued through this year, with annual mintages for the three-cent piece of approximately one million, give or take. These were simply replacements for those coins lost or not found fit for reissue after being redeemed. There was no actual increase in demand for this denomination.
Most survivors are slightly less than fully struck. The example illustrated reveals the die-clash impressions so common to the early dates but less often seen after the 1860s. Gems of this date are quite rare.
Varieties are limited to two, rather minor repunched dates.
Nice and original 1874 Three Cent Nickel
recently purchased from a large estate collection in which I bought the entirety of because of the originality and rarity of the coins which have not seen the light of day in over four decades! None of these coins have ever been sent to grading, and I refuse to mess with the grading services, so truth be told...Some of these coins are grand slams! No reserves and fast, free shipping as always!
